June 5, 2007: Recalled Ground Beef Possibly Contaminated with E. coli

Ground beef produced by United Food Group based in Los Angeles County, California, has been recalled as a result of possible E. coli contamination. The Orange County Health Care Agency noted that no food poisoning cases had been reported as yet.

The brands of ground beef and ground sirloin affected by the recall include Moran’s All-Natural, Inter-American Products, and Stater Bros. Markets. Product labels have an establishment number (EST. 1241) in the USDA mark of inspection or elsewhere on the package. They also have a “produced on” date of April 20, a “sell by” date of May 6 and a “freeze by” date of May 7 on the package. California, Arizona, Colorado, Oregon, and Utah received shipments of the meat.

E. coli O157:H7 is the suspected strain in this case. The same strain had been detected when over a dozen people who ate at the Souplantation restaurant in Orange County in March became ill.

Initial symptoms of E.coli O157:H7 infection include severe abdominal cramps and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all. There is usually little or no fever. Symptoms generally resolve in 5-10 days, but serious complications may ensue. Children and the elderly are at greatest risk of developing complications.
