The United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that further investigation has linked the Topps E. coli O157:H7 food poisoning outbreak and recall to Canadian beef supplier Ranchers Beef, Ltd.
Topps issued a recall of more than 21 million pounds of ground beef in late September, after their product was linked to an ongoing E. coli O157:H7 outbreak. The outbreak sickened at least 40 people in the U.S., resulting in 21 known hospitalizations. Ranchers Beef, Ltd., supplied the beef trim to Topps.
According to the FSIS press release, PFGE patterns (DNA fingerprints) of E. coli isolated from the Canadian beef trim matched the PFGE patterns of E. coli isolated from ill U.S. patients and E. coli isolated from recalled Topps beef products. PFGE patterns also linked the 45 illnesses and one death reported in Canada to Ranchers Beef, Ltd.
Ranchers Beef ceased operation on August 15, 2007. FSIS delisted Ranchers Beef, Ltd., on October 20, meaning the company’s products have not been eligible for import since that date.

According to the Knox County Health Department, three East Tennessee children contracted E. coli food poisoning several weeks ago from frozen ground beef patties that are part of the Cargill recall. The patties were manufactured by Cargill and sold at Sam’s Club.
The children tested positive for E. coli O157. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has labeled the strain connected with the Cargill recall outbreak # 0710NYEXH-1c.
A fourth case of E. coli food poisoning in a Tennessee child in Cocke County turned out not to be related to the Cargill recall.

Symptoms of E. coli food poisoning include severe abdominal cramps and watery diarrhea. The diarrhea may become bloody and can lead to dehydration. Complications of E. coli food poisoning may include Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a serious medical condition that occurs in about 2%-7% of cases. HUS is characterized by destruction of red blood cells, damage to the lining of blood vessel walls, and in severe cases, kidney failure. Blood transfusions and kidney dialysis are often required.
